Regular Duties of the Public Works Department
General Guidelines
Trash and recyclable materials shall be placed as neatly as possible on the planter strip between the sidewalk and curb.
Containers or materials may not be placed in the roadway.
All trash and recyclable materials must be placed curbside by 6:00 a.m. of the scheduled collection day.
Containers or materials may not be placed curbside earlier than 7:00 p.m. of the day prior to the scheduled collection day. Empty containers must be removed no later than 7:00 p.m. of the day of collection.
Containers, bags or bundles should not exceed 50 lbs in weight.
Regular trash collection day is Thursday of each week.
Regular recycling collection day is Wednesday of each week.

Trash and Recycling Collection
Regular trash collection days are Monday for all areas of Gloucester City west of the railroad tracks to the river (West Section) and Tuesday for all areas of Gloucester City east of the railroad tracks to the Mt. Ephraim and Haddon Township borders (East Section).
Trash
Carpet should be cut and tied in 4 foot long bundles not exceeding 50 lbs.
Waste wood should be cut and tied in 4 foot long bundles not exceeding 50 lbs. Nails should be removed or bent over to prevent injury to collection personnel.
Railroad ties are trash. They should be cut less than 4 feet in length and must weigh less than 50 lbs.
Construction waste or demolition debris generated by a private contractor must be removed and disposed of by the contractor.
Commingled Recyclables
Regular recycling collection days are Wednesday for all areas of Gloucester City west of the railroad tracks to the river (West Section) and Thursday for all areas of Gloucester City east of the railroad tracks to the Mt. Ephraim and Haddon Township borders (East Section).
Glass, aluminum, tin, and plastic containers (#1 and #2 plastic only) should be placed in the designated blue recycling containers. These blue recycling containers are for commingled recyclables only. If you need another blue recycling container, please contact the Public Works office at (856) 456-0781. There is a charge for these containers.
Paper
Newspaper, cardboard, mixed office and computer paper, magazines, and junk mail must be tied and bundled or placed in a container not to exceed 50 lbs. Paper should NOT be placed in plastic shopping bags.
Recycling is mandatory in the State of New Jersey
Recycling is mandatory in New Jersey. Beyond that, it also makes sense both economically and environmentally. By doing our part by separating our recyclables from our trash, we save on disposal fees as well as, protect our environment. With your help, we can continue to improve our efforts to reach our recycling goals. Your cooperation and assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Building and Grounds, Parks, Grass Cutting and Public Properties Maintenance
All parks and public properties are maintained by the Department of Public Works.
Curbs, Aprons, Roads and Inspections
All curbs, sidewalks and driveway aprons are the responsibility of the homeowners to maintain. If you are doing any new or replacement work, it is the responsibility of the homeowner and/or contractor to obtain a permit for this work. All work will be inspected by the Department of Public Works. Applications are available in the City Clerk’s Office at 512 Monmouth Street.
Yard Waste
Branches and brush should be cut into 4 foot lengths and securely tied in bundles weighing less than 50 lbs. Small brush should be placed in containers not exceeding 50 lbs. Branches and brush are a special pick up on Wednesdays. Please call (856) 456-0781 prior to Wednesday to schedule the pick-up.
Grass is a seasonal pick-up item. Grass season begins on the first Monday of May and continues into the middle of October. Place grass curbside in open containers or untied plastic bags. If plastic bags are used, they cannot be taken with the collection and must be left behind. To avoid having these bags blowing around, please leave a container to put them in. The only vegetation which will be taken for grass pick up is soft vegetative waste. Soft vegetative waste consists of grass, soft plants, and small amounts of leaves.
Leaves are a seasonal pick-up item. Leaf season begins the last Monday of October and continues until early December. The areas to be collected will be posted the week prior to collection. A schedule will be printed in the local newspaper prior to the beginning of leaf collection season. Place leaves on the planter strip between the sidewalk and curb for collection. Do not place leaves in the street since this creates a fire and safety hazard.
Stumps and large tree parts (tree parts larger than 5 inches in diameter) can be brought to the Public Works yard located at the end of Brick Street. Hours: Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. You must stop in the main office and show proof of residency before dropping items off. Landscapers are required to remove all yard waste created from their work and dispose of this debris at an approved recycling facility.

Grass is picked up between March 2011 and continues to October 2011.
Leaves are picked up between the last Monday in October until early December. The areas are posted the week prior to pick up and a schedule is printed in the local paper.

Motor Oil and Car Batteries
Motor oil and car batteries can be brought to the Public Works yard located at the end of Brick Street. Hours: Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. You must stop in the main office and show proof of residency before dropping items off.
Appliances and Metal Items
Appliances and metal items are a special pick up on Fridays. Please call (856) 456-0781 prior to Friday to schedule a pick up. These items should be placed curbside before 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning.
Concrete, bricks, and blocks can be brought to the Public Works yard located at the end of Brick Street. Hours: Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. You must stop in the main office and show proof of residency before dropping items off.
Special Pickups
Appliances and metal items are a special pickup. Please call 456-0781 to schedule a special Friday pickup. Items should be placed curbside before 7:00 am on Friday morning.
Hazardous Materials
Paints, solvents, asbestos, medical waste, household chemicals, etc. are considered hazardous waste and will not be picked up locally. Please call the Camden County Division of Environmental Affairs at (856) 858-5241 or the Gloucester City Department of Public Works for the county’s scheduled drop off days.
Saturday Drop Off of Trash, Debris, and Selected Recyclable Items
Trash, wood (cut into four foot lengths), furniture, branches, brush stumps, concrete, metal items and used motor oil may be dropped off at Public Works on the first Saturday of each month.
No paints or other hazardous chemicals or materials will be accepted. No metal drums or tanks will be accepted unless they are empty and cut up. No paper, cardboard, or commingled containers will be accepted for Saturday drop off. They are to be put out for regular curbside pickup on the regularly scheduled day.
Items that do not conform to Gloucester City's trash and recycling regulations will not be accepted. Residents are permitted to drop off one load of items. No return trips are permitted on the same day.
This service is for Gloucester City residents only to dispose of item from their Gloucester City properties only. Contractors are not permitted to use this service. Please call 456-0781.
Consumer Electronics Recycling Program
Effective Immediately, residents of the City of Gloucester City will be required to Recycle Consumer Electronic Products. These products are to be dropped off at the Public Works Garage at the Foot of Brick Street and will no longer be picked up with the regular trash collection.

Street Signs and Traffic Lights
All street signs, warning signs, regulatory signs, etc. are maintained by the Department of Public Works. If you notice a vandalized sign, faded sign, have a request or a question, please call the Department of Public Works.
